Odd Count Peyote

Row 1 & 2

When we start Odd Count Peyote we always pick up the first two rows together. If you want a piece of beadwork 21 beads wide we pick up 21 beads (11 for Row 1 & 10 for Row 2).

I always tend to start at the bottom left of the pattern and work left to right, but you can start top right, bottom right or even top left.

Note: I am colouring the start bead of each row in pink to help guide you. See how this looks a little different to Even Count Peyote due to that extra pesky bead!

Row 3

We are now working in a right to left direction and we will be picking up 11 beads to create Row 3.

After each bead picked up go through the Next But One bead of Row 1 & 2. Beads to pick up are:

Row 3
(R-L)
A
11

Row 3 Turn - Step 1

But wait, as the number of beads we picked up in Row 1 & 2 was an odd amount there is no bead on the previous row to secure the last bead picked up into place.

We need to do a special turn on odd row numbers using the tail of thread instead.

Bring the tail of thread up and pass needle and thread around the tail of thread and go back through the last bead picked up:

Row 3 Turn - Step 2

Pull thread tighter so the tail of thread enters the last bead picked up so the tail of thread now extends from this bead.

Note: How the tail of thread has now moved up the beadwork. We will use this to our advantage on the next rows.

Row 4

See now by adding Row 3, Row 1 & Row 2 have now been seperated.

We are now working in a left to right direction and we will be picking up 10 beads to create Row 4.

After each bead picked up go through the Next bead of Row 3

Row 5

We are now working in a right to left direction and we will be picking up 11 beads to create Row 5.

After each bead picked up go through the Next bead of previous row.

Row 5 Turn - Step 1

Once again need to do a special turn using the tail of thread as we are on an odd row number.

Bring the tail of thread up and pass needle and thread around the tail of thread and go back through the last bead picked up.

Row 5 Turn - Step 2

Pull thread tighter so the tail of thread enters the last bead picked up so the tail of thread now extends from this bead.

Row 6

We are now working in a left to right direction and we will be picking up 10 beads to create Row 6.

After each bead picked up go through the Next bead of previous row.

Row 7 Onwards

All rows onwards are a repeat of Row 5 and Row 6
